The exhibition presents for the first time to the public three works purchased in recent years by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and for Tourism and destined for the National Gallery of Liguria at Palazzo Spinola, combined with others which, with an enlightened spirit, are instead, they were granted on deposit to the museum by various realities, including private ones. This nucleus of panels, made between the second half of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the following century by Giovanni Mazone, Nicolò Corso, Carlo Braccesco, Ludovico Brea and Agostino Bombelli, significantly increases the contents of the National Gallery of Liguria, whose heritage it consists mainly of works dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that closely dialogue with the paintings preserved for centuries in the rooms of the palace that belonged to the Marquis Spinola.
The exposed tables, therefore, represent precious pieces for the knowledge of an era otherwise poorly documented in the home of Pellicceria. A lively and varied period from the point of view of artistic production, in which Genoa, thanks to the refined taste of rich and demanding clients looking for productions of the highest quality level, was chosen by many "foreign" artists from different territorial contexts, including including Lombardy and Piedmont, which center to start your own business. Real entrepreneurs at the head of established workshops interpreters of the multifaceted figurative culture that has characterized the Ligurian context for many decades from the mid-fifteenth century to the beginning of the following century.
The works exhibited on this occasion, with the sole exception of the two fragments of predella referring to Mazone of which the ancient relevance is not known for now, are related to individual specific episodes of the figurative path of the authors. These are commissions that contribute significantly to the reconstruction of the biographical events of the painters and to better define their versatile and diverse temperament.
