From 29 April to 1 November 2023 it will be possible to admire the highly anticipated Letizia Battaglia retrospective exhibition in the Sottoporticato of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa . It's me , curated by Paolo Falcone, promoted by the Palazzo Ducale Foundation for Culture in Genoa and Civita Exhibitions and Museums in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive and the Falcone Foundation for the Arts.
With over 100 large-format photographs, exhibited in the halls of the Sottoporticato of the Palazzo Ducale, the exhibition spans the entire professional life of the Sicilian photographer and develops along an articulated narrative path divided into 4 sections, with black and white images and a series of large-format color photos of his latest work, as well as video documents, part of his editorial production and unpublished materials.
The exhibition itinerary focuses on the topics that have built the artist's most characteristic expressive figure, leading her to develop a profound and continuous social critique, avoiding clichés and questioning the visual assumptions of contemporary culture. The result is a true portrait, that of an intellectual against the tide, but also a poetic and political photographer, a woman who was interested in her surroundings and in what, far from her, intrigued her.
Those of "her" little girls are looks full of dignity, compassion, silent resignation with which Letizia builds an intimate and profound empathic dialogue, full of respect and understanding, as in the image of the little girl with the ball. Going beyond photography, the art and civil commitment, Letizia Battaglia stood out for her passionate social and political commitment, portraying the profound essence of Sicily, the faces and society of Palermo, the crime scenes and the victims of the Mafia. Letizia Battaglia is famous for her photographs on the Mafia, in which policemen, magistrates, representatives of the institutions symbolize the civil struggle against Cosa Nostra, against corruption, violence and organized crime.
He covered all of Palermo, not to mention the contribution made to theatre, publishing and the promotion of photography as a discipline. She has been recognized as one of the most important figures in contemporary photography not only for her images firmly present in the collective imagination, but also for the civil and ethical value she attributes to photography.
Civil rights are essentially the rights of others, wrote Pier Paolo Pasolini and Letizia Battaglia recounted the uncomfortable reality with an attentive, lucid, merciless eye.
