It is titled Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida: the Mediterranean impressionist and it is the dialogical exhibition that the Museums of Nervi-Raccolte Frugone host from Thursday, October 17 (opening on Wednesday 15) until January 26, 2025. Dialogical, because the exhibition compares the two masterpieces of the most important Spanish impressionist painter listed in the catalog of the Frugone Collections - Return from fishing, signed and dated 1904, and Nap in a boat, dated 1895/1896 - with an illustrious guest: it is Return from First Communion, an oil on canvas by the master Joaquín Sorolla dated 1892 coming from the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art "Casa Cavazzini" in Udine.
An artist with the rare ability to capture the relationship between light and color, a color that explodes with intensity under the Mediterranean sun of the beaches of Valencia, Sorolla is now one of the most appreciated Impressionist painters outside the better-known French group. A lover of nature, and especially the sea, Sorolla stages, without any political or critical intent, the life that unfolds before his eyes, making explicit the constant bond that in the second half of the nineteenth century merges art and photography.
