The exhibition, which will be visitable at Castello D’Albertis from November 18th to March 6th, stems from the material memories of Captain d’Albertis' first journey around the world, from Borneo to Peru, through India, Australia and New Zealand, China and Japan, the United States and Central America. Displayed as in a cabinet of curiosities and presented as hunting trophies according to the period arrangement desired by Captain d’Albertis, these objects materialize the nineteenth-century gaze towards the Other, which accompanies us in the exhibition up to the present day, helping us transition from a conception in which non-European indigenous populations were treated as objects of photographic shots and exotic exhibitions, to one in which they are involved as full subjects of representation and history. The encounters and events of this year-long journey fill a large album of memories of Captain d’Albertis, exhibited in the show and now also available digitally along with its reinforced copy. Among the numerous stories, there is one in particular that has opened up new and unexpected narratives and connections for the museum: the purchase receipt from the Melbourne studio of the German photographer J.W. Lindt (1845-1926) for images taken in Australia (Clarence River Valley), staged photography shots, precisely constructed in the studio by Lindt himself, portraying Australian aborigines and picturesque landscapes. In this perspective, the participation in our project by the leading expert on J.W. Lindt, Australian photography historian Ken Orchard, has provided us with information and content on these unpublished images, which in turn have helped answer still open questions about the life and works of this great photographer.
