The show

From 30 July to 25 September 2022 the photographer Luigi Spina , known for his research focused on the forms of antiquity, from classical sculptures to archaeological finds, up to the relationship between art and the sacred, recently protagonist of the Sing Sing solo exhibitions. The body of Pompeii and the Confratelli at the MANN in Naples - projects collected in the volumes published by the 5 Continents Editions publishing house - presents for the first time to the public in the rooms of Palazzo San Domenico in Francavilla al Mare (CH) , headquarters of the Michetti Foundation , a selection of 39 unpublished black and white shots taken from the MATRES project. The soul of this land is the mud , dedicated to its land, Campania.

Precious tuff statues depicting female divinities , now preserved in the Campano Museum in Capua, the Matres - “Mothers” - came to light in 1845, by chance, at the Patturelli fund in the territory of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, the ancient Capua. Seated, as if on a throne, with infants on the lap, they were an exceptional discovery: unique in their kind and closely connected with the identity of the Campania region, dating from the 5th to the 2nd century. BC, over time they became symbols of the Terra di Lavoro, as the province of Caserta was called, and represent a hymn to life and fertility.

With this new project, Spina investigates through the photographic medium the relationship that is established between the bodies sculpted in the tuff and the territory to which they belong , claiming an identity role for these sculptures that become the epicenter of a complex visual story. From Spina's photographs emerges the relationship of the Mothers with the Campania landscape and work, recalling now the irregular surfaces of the tuffaceous banks, characteristic of the territory, now the crops of tobacco, hemp and corn. The Mothers also symbolize an idyllic time in which man and nature lived in symbiosis, a past now clouded by the industrial logic of the last forty years, by pollution and building speculation, which have made work a utopian idea.
