The Villa Medicea della Petraia is one of the most fascinating Medici villas, due to its fortunate location in the landscape, the excellence of the pictorial decorations, and the lush nature of the park.
Located just a few kilometers from Florence, it is a typical suburban residence, a refuge for the grand dukes of the Medici family from the city's hustle and bustle. An ancient fortified building, of which the large tower still remains, was enlarged towards the end of the sixteenth century to create the current villa, and the surrounding land was excavated to frame it in the beautiful terraced garden.
The courtyard of the Villa Medicea della Petraia, covered in the nineteenth century, is decorated with frescoes by the Volterrano and Cosimo Daddi.
The famous bronze sculpture by Giambologna depicting Venus-Florence, which once completed the homonymous fountain located in the garden of the Villa di Castello, is now placed indoors to ensure its preservation. Some openings of the Villa Medicea della Petraia and the care of some green spaces are carried out thanks to the collaboration with the Angels of Beauty who work alongside the museum staff.
