In the charming intersection of Lady Stair’s Close along the Royal Mile, The Writers' Museum, housed in the historic Lady Stair’s House (rebuilt in medieval style at the end of the 19th century), celebrates the lives and works of three giants of Scottish literature: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
The exhibition, compact yet prestigious, features original portraits, manuscripts, first editions, and personal items: from the famous printing carpet used for Scott's novels to the couch where Burns wrote, to the riding boots and the ring gifted by a Samoan chief to Stevenson. Helmets, skull casts, and Scott's device add a touch of historical truth to this rich collection.
The museum occupies intimate and well-preserved rooms, arranged on multiple levels connected by ancient stairs: an environment that amplifies the narrative charm of the displayed biographies. Next to the entrance, Makars’ Court, a small paved square with engraved literary quotes, pays tribute to the great Scottish authors from the 14th century to the present day.
