Brodsworth Hall was bought by George Hay, 8th Earl of Kinnoull, in 1713. Later, his second son Robert settled on the estate and made a number of improvements to the house and grounds. Upon his death in 1777, the house was left empty, and his eldest son sold the estate in 1790 to Peter Thellusson, a member of the Swiss banking family. The mansion, over the centuries, has seen several owners inside until its last resident, Pamela Williams, in 1990 donated both the house and the gardens to English Heritage. The choice was also made to keep the interiors as found rather than replace or restore them. The house built in the Italian style by Philip Wilkinson, has more than 30 rooms, ranging from large reception rooms with original furnishings to servants' rooms. The house is surrounded by Victorian gardens, used for special events throughout the summer. Additionally, Brodsworth Hall is known for Charles Sabine Thellusson's collection of paintings and sculptures, including an extensive collection of Italian sculptures purchased at the 1865 Dublin International Exhibition.
