The Künstlerkolonie Museum in Darmstadt (Mathildenhöhe) is a museum dedicated to the history of the Darmstadt artists' colony (Darmstädter Künstlerkolonie), a group of Jugendstil artists born in Darmstadt around 1900 and sponsored by the Grand Duke of Hesse Ernst Ludwig von Hessen. It was constituted as a village-atelier which included studio-apartments, a laboratory-school and the residence of the Grand Duke itself. The colony's goal was to promote the region's economic growth through the presence of the most important German-speaking artists, whose works are presented to the public in a series of exhibitions. The museum is housed in the Ernst-Ludwig-Haus, which was rebuilt in the late 1980s. This is the building of the group's studio, built starting from 1900 to a design by Joseph Olbrich. The museum, which opened in May 1990, documents the 15-year history of Darmstadt's artist community (from 1899 to 1914) and offers an overview of the works of its 23 members.
