The Kunsthalle Darmstadt is a contemporary art exhibition space in Darmstadt. It deals with the organization of exhibitions and events related to contemporary art. The Kunsthalle was born from the association of the Kunstverein Darmstadt, which in turn dates back to the founding of the Art Association for the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1833 under the protectorate of the Grand Duke Louis II, making it one of the oldest art associations of the Germany. Like other art associations, in the 19th century the Kunsthalle Darmstadt achieved a central role in promoting contemporary art. The current seat of the Kunsthalle was erected in the 1950s, and was one of the first exhibition buildings to be built after the Second World War. As an exhibition venue, the Kunsthalle offers a diverse program dedicated to current art trends in all genres. The exhibition activities focus on established and young artists. A diverse range of educational offerings and outreach activities - from artist lectures and public visits to the accompanying exhibition support program, with lectures, film screenings and regular evening events - complete the Kunsthalle's offer.
