Located in a prominent position in front of the Cathedral, Palazzo della Corgna was the private residence of the brothers Ascanio and Fulvio della Corgna, Marquises of Città della Pieve and Castiglion del Lago and Perpetual Governors of the city, as well as grandsons of Pope Julius III del Monte. They lived in the heart of the 16th century and despite their blood ties, they could not have been more different from each other: Ascanio was a military leader and had an adventurous life that ended in 1571 after the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks, where he was among the commanders of the Christian army, while Fulvio was a skilled cardinal. Both were men of great culture, as can also be seen from the frescoes that decorate their residence. They were passionate about classical culture and had a court of poets, painters, and musicians, among whom the mannerist painter Pomarancio and the poet Cesare Caporali are remembered. The interior rooms of the palace, built in the mid-16th century, are finely frescoed with grotesques and scenes from mythology: The Concert of the Muses by Pomarancio in the ground floor hall and "The Banquet of the Gods" and "The Loves of the Gods" taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses and painted in the noble hall on the first floor by Salvio Savini in 1580. Also on the first floor of the palace is the interesting Museum of Natural Sciences, which houses a collection of fossils and minerals, a wood collection, a seed collection, and the reconstruction of the geological evolution of the territory.
