The MACC - Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the city of Caltagirone, in the province of Catania. The city is famous for its pottery and its wide stairways. The MACC, based in the eighteenth-century Ospedale delle Donne, was born in 1996 following the donation of the works of the Calatine artist Gianni Ballarò by his wife. To this first nucleus of works is subsequently added the collection of contemporary art, acquired by the Municipality of Caltagirone on the occasion of the National Ceramics Exhibition since 1980. The MACC today exhibits works by artists from the national panorama of the last sixty years and a large group of local authors, with particular attention to Art Brut. Among the artists present there are Luigi Ontani, Lucilla Catania, Aldo Rontini, Paul Klerr, Luigi Mainolfi and Ettore Consolazione. Thanks to the donation of Sylvia Franchi, Director of the Artivisive Gallery in Rome, the collection now includes works by Giulio Turcato, Mario Ceroli, Giacomo Balla, Enrico Accatino, Stelvio Botta, Tano Festa and many others. The Museum houses a rich specialist video library, a photographic and documentary archive and a library.
