From 14 February to 11 June 2023
Thirty-six years have passed, more than a generation, since the great exhibition that in 1987 Brescia dedicated to Giacomo Ceruti (Milan, 1698-1767). The time is therefore ripe to return to investigating this painter who, with his touching representations of the humble classes and his penetrating portraits, established himself as one of the most original voices of the figurative culture of the eighteenth century.
What makes a new insight into the figure of the artist necessary is the fact that, in these thirty-five years, the knowledge and evaluation of his physiognomy have changed in a way, in some respects, radically.
Thanks to exceptional loans from Paris, Vienna, Madrid, Gothenburg and numerous public and private Italian collections, the large Ceruti monograph designed by the Brescia Musei Foundation highlights, on the one hand, Giacomo Ceruti's roots in the adventure of 'painting of reality' in Lombardy, on the other the international scope of his career.
The exhibition, an exceptional co-production with the Getty Center , will in fact be exhibited in Los Angeles from July 18th.
