From February 27 to June 2, 2026, Accademia Carrara presents TAROT. The origins, the cards, the fortune, the most extensive and complete exhibition ever dedicated to the history of tarot cards, curated by Paolo Plebani.

A long-awaited project: after over a century, the 74 cards of the Colleoni Deck, the most complete in the world among ancient ones, are reunited, now preserved between the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, The Morgan Library & Museum in New York, and a private collection.

The occasion of this exceptional reunion has given rise to an equally unique project: a journey spanning seven centuries, from the 15th to the 20th century and beyond, which, thanks to prestigious national and international loans, delves into the history of tarot cards, the patrons, the artists, the techniques - also in light of recent scientific investigations - their fortune, inspirations, and the charm that these cards continue to exert.

Born as an aristocratic pastime and spread with the invention of printing, tarot cards established themselves as a divinatory tool in the 18th century, achieving extraordinary cultural and symbolic success in the 20th century and up to the present day. The themes addressed in the exhibition provide the most extensive and articulated overview of tarot cards ever created: from the 15th century of Bonifacio Bembo, author of the Colleoni cards, to Surrealism with artists like Victor Brauner, from miniatures inspired by Petrarchan Triumphs to contemporary interpretations by Irving Penn, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Leonora Carrington.
