From March 2 to July 28, 2024, the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa present Renaissance in black and white. The art of engraving in Venice (1494-1615), an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the "very happy black lines" of Venetian engraving and the authentic revolution that was the birth and spread of printing, an epochal phenomenon that invested Europe and transformed Venice into an essential crossroads of artistic experiences, generating some of the most fascinating achievements of the entire Renaissance. Curated by Giovanni Maria Fara and David Landau, among the greatest scholars of engraving art, and by an authoritative scientific committee, the exhibition presents 90 graphic masterpieces created by the greatest artists of the Renaissance including Andrea Mantegna, Albrecht Dürer, Jacopo de’ Barbari, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Cornelis Cort, Agostino Carracci, Giuseppe Scolari. The exhibition will lead visitors into the monochromatic universe of printing through a scenographic and immersive set-up designed by the theater director Andrea Bernard, awarded the European Opera Director Prize in 2015. Accompanying the exhibition is also an important scientific publication, in Italian and English, with contributions from esteemed international scholars to provide an important update to the field of study. A suggestive exhibition that retraces an unrepeatable season of the Venetian Renaissance and celebrates an art, refined and surprising, that was able to dialogue with the achievements of painting and even to influence it, as if one were the mirror of the other.
