The Civic Museum of Bassano continues its proposal in the wake of great international photography, presenting to the public the exhibition Brassaï. The Eye of Paris, curated by Philippe Ribeyrolles and Barbara Guidi, from November 16, 2024, to April 21, 2025.
Produced in collaboration with Silvana Editoriale and with the Brassaï Estate, the exhibition will present nearly 200 vintage prints, as well as sculptures, documents, and objects belonging to the photographer, offering an in-depth and original look at Brassaï's work, with particular attention to the famous images dedicated to the French capital and his life.
Born Hungarian - his real name is Gyula Halasz, replaced by the pseudonym Brassaï in honor of Brasso, his hometown - but an adopted Parisian, Brassaï (1899-1984) was, along with Cartier-Bresson, one of the fathers of 20th-century photography, author of images that still today identify in the collective imagination the face of the capital of modern art, Paris. A cosmopolitan painter, sculptor, writer, and intellectual, a curious, sharp, and sensitive observer, Brassaï chose to dedicate himself mainly to photography around 1929, only after his definitive move to the French capital.
His most famous images, such as the Paris by Night series and the photos that inspired the emerging poetics of Surrealism, as well as those of the Graffiti series that anticipated the poetics of Informal and Art Brut, accompanied by a selection of sculptures, a tapestry, documents, and objects belonging to the artist, will be articulated in an exhibition path of ten thematic sections that will immerse the visitor in the sophisticated and mysterious atmospheres of the French capital of the first half of the 20th century, a destination for artists and intellectuals, a "spectacle city" that seduces and captivates.
