In the heart of Avignon, inside the elegant Hôtel de Villeneuve-Martignan, the Fondation Calvet makes available to the public the prestigious Musée Calvet, founded thanks to the collection of the Enlightenment physician Esprit Calvet, who in 1810 left over 12,000 objects that gave rise to one of the oldest French museum institutions.
The museum offers a wide range of collections: painting, sculpture, decorative arts, archaeology, and ethnography, with works covering the period from the 16th to the 20th century. Stand out paintings by French masters (such as Joseph Vernet, Jacques-Louis David) and European artists from the Italian, Flemish, and Spanish schools. A separate scenographic environment is dedicated to jewelry, ceramics, furniture, porcelain, and precious tapestries, enhancing Provencal culture and its decorative heritage.
