Raffaele Ragione
Woman seen from behind, late 19th-early 20th century, pencil on paper, 190×120 mm
(Naples 1851 – 1925) a student of Domenico Morelli at the Academy of Fine Arts, he was later influenced by the painting of the Resina School, with anti-academic positions close to the Macchiaioli movement. His painting depicts scenes taken from real life and rendered through colors applied with rapid strokes. In 1900, he moved to Paris, developing a style close to late French Impressionism. The distinctive features of his painting are also recognizable in the drawings on display.
The works of Raffaele Ragione, along with those of Vincenzo Gemito, are the only ones in the collection belonging to artists who are not contemporaries of Maurizio Valenzi, probably donated by collector friends.
