The work is made in counterpart (therefore the reverse of the original image) datable between 1657 and 1666. Gérard Edelinck was born in Antwerp around 1640 where he trained with Cornelius Galle the Younger (grandson of the more famous Philips Galle). Edelinck finds the greatest recognition of his activity as court engraver during the reign of Louis XIV of France (together with Charles Le Brun and Gérard Audran) when he reaches notable heights with the realization, for example, of Raphael's Holy Family "of a vividness , of an unsurpassed work ”(De Angelis 1811), or of the famous Des Tableaux du Roi of 1679. As to why Edelinck faces the episode of Rubens' banner, presumably before his arrival in Paris, there are no certainties. The study of Leonardo's work proposed by Rubens' work, or the customs of the time, may have influenced. The fact remains that the work contributed significantly to the success of Leonardo's iconography of the Battle of Anghiari.
