Eduard Bargheer
Untitled, 1965, mixed media on paper, 36×49 cm
Born in Finkenwerder in Germany in 1901. He was one of the first German artists to settle on the island of Ischia. Already in 1936, he stayed for a short period in Sant'Angelo where he met his fellow countryman Werner Gilles (1894-1961), one of the artists who would be banned the following year by the Minister of Nazi Propaganda. After World War II, during which he served in the German Navy, Bargheer returned to the island of Ischia, where he lived almost continuously until the early 1970s.
In the post-war period, Forio d'Ischia welcomed, at the famous Bar Internazionale di Maria, many intellectuals and artists including Gino Coppa, Carlo Levi, and Giuseppe Patalano. The expressionist lesson and the subsequent shift towards abstraction found artistic expression in the streets, beaches, houses, and port of Forio. He died in Hamburg in 1979.
