The plate, painted in full polychromy, illustrates the story of Daedalus and Icarus told in Ovid 's Metamorphoses and is part of a nucleus of historiated majolica, so called for their narrative taste.
Above, father and son conquer the sky thanks to the wings built with feathers and wax; below, Daedalus helps Icarus after his fall, which occurred due to getting too close to the sun. A timeless metaphor that reminds us how one cannot challenge the limits of one's nature.
The date of execution, 1542, is painted on the reverse of the artefact.
