The Catalan paper money (1936-1939) was born due to the adverse economic circumstances that arose during the Civil War , both for the hoarding of silver by private individuals and the republican government, and for the withdrawal of small coins. to bake use this material in the war industry.
To try to solve this problem, in September 1936 the Catalan government promoted an initiative to start issuing its own paper money, of ten, five and two and a half pesetas, which did not prosper due to the opposition of the central government, and did it does not even solve the problem of small change.
Having said this, the government of the Generalitat, through the modification of the Catalan municipal law of 9 October 1936, has conferred on the municipalities the power to issue small-value fiduciary money and compulsory legal tender, limited to the municipal term of origin. This paper money was gradually canceled when the Catalan municipalities were occupied by the Francoist army.
