Palazzo del Monferrato in Alessandria hosts the exhibition “Alessandria. The Twentieth Century - from Pellizza to Carrà a history of artists ”promoted by the Piedmont Region, the Alessandria Savings Bank Foundation and the Alessandria-Asti Chamber of Commerce.

The exhibition, curated by Maria Luisa Caffarelli and Rino Tacchella, inaugurated on Saturday 11 December 2021 and open to the public until 1 May 2022 , sees the works of the main artists of the twentieth century originating from the Alessandria province, between which Pellizza, Morbelli and Monteverde , also known internationally. However, a very considerable number of other artists absolutely worthy of appearing alongside masters or heads of school were born in the territory of Alexandria.

Some moving to centers such as Milan, Turin or Rome, others making trips to Europe at the time anything but easy, many in the prevailing dimension of the city of origin in which they continued to operate, all of them contributed in various ways to intertwine on the territory a network of relationships that has given rise to a dense web of creativity and research.

The exhibition is an opportunity to rediscover through the eyes the productions of artists such as Carrà, who, with their adherence and participation to the main artistic and cultural movements of the last century, have contributed to bringing the expressive avant-gardes to the local territory. culture was taking its steps.

The Cassa di Risparmio di Alessandria Foundation, by directing its acquisitions towards artists - not only in the twentieth century - who have roots and ties in the territory, has given a precious line of collection that has allowed the curators of the exhibition “Alessandria. Il Novecento ”to draw from the same collection, achieving the aim of giving visibility to a heritage of high cultural value. The Alessandria-Asti Chamber of Commerce also possesses a large collection of these authors, largely unpublished, linked to exhibition moments which the same body had promoted in the second half of the century that make a decisive contribution to the exhibition itinerary.

Finally, an important role is played by the works of private collectors who, with the attention and sensitivity always shown for the most representative artists, but also for some of apparently lesser visibility, have helped to keep the memory of those authors alive.
