Wolverhampton's Bilston Gallery is located in a locally classified historic location in tree-lined Mount Pleasant. The building was built in 1905 by Frederick Harper as a stylish Victorian mansion for his family on the site of Brueton House.
Before being converted into a museum, the premises were occupied by Bilston Girls' High School in 1918, until Bilston Borough Council conceived the idea of opening a municipal art gallery and museum on the site, combining it with the public library. which was housed in the town hall. Fundamental was the contribution of Sir William Thompson, a native of Bilston, who donated 1,000 pounds and a collection of around 100 paintings to the new gallery.
In 1999 the Bilston Art Gallery and Museum became the Bilston Craft Gallery to bring the best of contemporary craftsmanship to the West Midlands and explore the rich heritage of design and industrial manufacturing in the region.
