Stadtmuseum am Markt is a museum in Wiesbaden dedicated to the history of the city. It is located in the heart of the city, in the Market Square (Marktplatz), and traces the history of Wiesbaden from prehistoric times to the present day, within an exhibition area of 1300 square meters, through finds found in the city and in the surrounding area. . The collection is one of the most important cultural and historical collections in the region. In addition to the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions are regularly organized.
The museum's collections currently consist of two main areas: the Nassau Antiquities Collection (SNA) and the 19th to 21st century Wiesbaden Cultural and Daily History Collection, currently under construction. In the future there should be a collection on the history of television.
The SNA collection has its origins in the purchase of the collection of the Frankfurt Baron Johann Isaac von Gerning in 1820. The archaeological finds from the Nassau Antiquities Collection, consisting of approximately 240,000 items, certainly represent the largest patrimony of the collection. With approximately 40,000 objects, the Nassau Antiquities Collection also includes a vast heritage of graphic works, photographs, paintings, documents and documents about characters from Nassau's history. The handicrafts of the collection range from the ivory processing of the early Middle Ages to the objects of the historicism of the nineteenth century. There are also objects relating to military history, a numismatic collection and a collection of sculptures.
