The Municipal Museum of Vigo "Quiñones de León" is a municipal institution of the city of Vigo. The museum, born in 1924, is focused on the Galician aristocracy. Declared a historic-artistic monument, its collections, gardens and Castrelos park are also declared of cultural interest.
The vast collection began to take shape in the thirties thanks to the acquisition of works on deposit from the Prado Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the legacy of Josè Polipcarpo Sanz.
The museum is particularly noteworthy for its collection of Galician art together with works of Spanish art, applied arts and painting and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The collection of paintings in total has about one thousand and five hundred works of art and is divided into three parts: ancient painting, with works from the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries and the two deposits of the Prado Museum.
The archeology collection includes the historical evidence of the city, which emerged from the ground over the years. These remains are not only numerically abundant but also represent the most important cultural representation of southern Galicia.
The history collection includes objects that document the history of the city of Vigo and its region. There are some examples relating to the Battle of Rande (1702), the Reconquista (1809), and Spanish Independence.
Inside the gallery there are also portraits of famous people from Vigo - or Filovigueses - such as José Elduayen, García Barbón, Policarpo Sanz, Casto Méndez Núñez or Eduardo Iglesias. Recently, documents by Antonio Palacios, coming from the Municipal Archives, have been added to the collection for a monographic room montaxe; and a map of the place of the works of Porto de Vigo (1905), from the Municipal Cartography.
