From 22 December to 28 May 2023
The exhibition “The creators of eternal Egypt. Scribes, craftsmen and workers at the service of the pharaoh", which will be held in the Basilica Palladiana from 22 December 2022 to 7 May 2023, is the last internationally important exhibition of the "Grandi Mostre in Basilica" cycle, conceived by the Municipality of Vicenza with the Andrea Palladio International Center for Architecture Studies and the Fondazione Teatro Comunale Città di Vicenza to enhance the cultural excellence of the city.
Curated by the Egyptian Museum, in particular by Corinna Rossi, Cédric Gobeil and Paolo Marini, under the coordination of the director of the Egyptian Museum, Christian Greco, the exhibition recounts daily life in ancient Egypt, with a particular focus on Thebes and Deir el- Medina, the village, founded around 1500 BC, where scribes, draftsmen and craftsmen worked to build and decorate the tombs of the pharaohs in the Valleys of the Kings and Queens.
«With the exhibition “The creators of eternal Egypt. Scribes, craftsmen and workers at the service of the pharaoh”, observes Francesco Rucco, Mayor of Vicenza, the cycle of three major exhibitions of international importance commissioned by the municipal administration of Vicenza and organized with the aim of enhancing the cultural excellence of the area is completed , combining originality and attractiveness in the exhibition proposals. After the great exhibition "The Renaissance Factory", thanks to an active collaboration with the director of the Egyptian Museum Christian Greco, this exhibition will welcome masterpieces that will come from Turin, accompanied by a series of exceptional loans from the Louvre Museum in Paris. This third important event is made possible thanks to the consolidated collaboration between the Civic Museums, the Municipal Theater and the Andrea Palladio International Center for Architecture Studies, the all-Vicenza working group that gave life to the cultural operation of the three major exhibitions in the Basilica».
The exhibition brings together more than one hundred and eighty objects, of which about 160 from the Egyptian Museum and 20 from the Louvre in Paris: masterpieces of statuary, decorated sarcophagi, papyrus rolls, bas-reliefs, painted steles, amphorae and amulets. There are many hidden treasures mostly from the collections of the Egyptian Museum, which will be revealed during the exhibition. These include the anthropoid sarcophagus of Khonsuirdis and the famous trousseau of Queen Nefertari from one of the most beautiful tombs in the Valley of the Queens, which returns to Italy, in Vicenza, after several years of touring abroad, on loan to museums and international institutions .
