The Municipal Gallery of Modern Art and Contemporary Art of Viareggio (GAMC) is housed in the historic Palazzo delle Muse, in the city center. The permanent collection of the Municipal Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Viareggio (GAMC) consists of about 3,000 works coming mostly from private donations. The first group was formed in 1979 with the purchase by the Municipality of 50 works by Lorenzo Viani of Varraud Santini Collection which, along with other captured or present in other donations, is today the most important public collection of works by the Master, original European expressionism exponent. A strong impetus to the establishment of the city museum was given by Lucarelli Donation, 45 works by important Italian artists of the '900. The donation Pieraccini, with about 2,300 works, most of European contemporary art, has given final start the establishment of GAMC based in Palazzo delle Muse. The largest part of the collection consists of works of graphic this makes the Institute one of the most important national specialized exhibition centers in the area. The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions and educational activities for the younger audience.
