From 17 April to 8 September 2024
The Museum of Palazzo Grimani, Venetian Heritage and Colnaghi are pleased to present the exhibition dossier Tintoretto and Giovanni Grimani portraits compared dedicated to the portraiture of Giovanni Grimani, patriarch of Aquileia. The exhibition is part of the process of valorisation and promotion of the history and collections of the palace undertaken starting from 2019 with the reorganization of the Grimani Tribuna and the Doge's Hall thanks to the collaboration between the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate and Venetian Heritage.
On the occasion of this special exhibition, the Portrait of Giovanni Grimani attributed to Domenico Tintoretto, already in the museum's collections thanks to the acquisition and donation of the same by Venetian Heritage, is compared with two other paintings by the hand of his father Jacopo Tintoretto, testifying to the iconographic development of the effigy of the Venetian prelate in a succession that covers several decades between the second half of the 16th century and the early years of the 17th.
An exceptional loan is a small oil on panel depicting the Portrait of the Patriarch Giovanni Grimani, recently rediscovered in a private collection by the Colnaghi Gallery and exhibited to the public for the first time in this exhibition. The panel was created by Jacopo Tintoretto probably as a model for the execution of two masterpieces by the artist: the Portrait of the Patriarch Giovanni Grimani owned by the Schorr Collection, exhibited in the exhibition, and the well-known Portrait of Giovanni Grimani preserved at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam .
The exhibition is accompanied by a volume, published by Marsilio Arte, richly illustrated and which for the occasion will provide an updated reading of the ways in which the image of the Venetian prelate was defined through his portrait, addressing the biographical events, the context historical-political, iconographic and iconological issues and the client relationship with Tintoretto.
The exhibition project, curated by Toto Bergamo Rossi, Daniele Ferrara and Valeria Finocchi, and promoted, organized and financed by the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate, Venetian Heritage and Colnaghi, represents a new example of virtuous collaboration between public and private which together contribute to the valorisation and the enjoyment of cultural heritage.
