From 5 May to 1 October 2023
The exhibition is conceived as the organization of a space through the installation of ten unpublished pictorial works by Giovanni Soccol, which in their overall exhibition determine a space marked by a constant rhythm that gives unity to the whole. The theme of this cycle of paintings arises from the vision of a Venetian architecture that rises from the water where, reflecting itself, it dissolves. In fact, Soccol wanted to represent the charm of an apparition that can vanish, belonging more to a dream than to reality.
The whole is presided over by an analysis of the geometric relationships that link the compositional elements in a non-perspective vision, but one projected orthogonally to the canvas so as not to alter the geometry of the forms. A nocturnal light connects and joins the elements together, giving the architecture a metaphysical atmosphere, not new in the work of the Venetian artist as it is the common thread of his research in recent decades. The subject of this series of paintings consists of ten symbolic architectures overlooking the Grand Canal, starting from the Dogana da Mar up to the church of San Simeone, each of which aroused a particular interest in Soccol, which resulted in a formal dialogue and spiritual.
The canvases, whose stretcher measures 200 cm in height by 150 in width, are all painted with mixed techniques, i.e. lean tempera bases, water-in-oil emulsion bodies, oil-resinous glazes, all prepared directly in the atelier by the artist, following a research on traditional historical methodologies.
