From 11 May to 13 November 2019
On the 70th anniversary of the death of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, and coinciding with the 58th Biennale of art, Palazzo Fortuny intends to pay homage to the multifaceted Spanish artist by highlighting the importance of the family context in his artistic training. For the first time an exhibition is dedicated to Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (1838-1874) and to his son Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949).
The reference to the Biennale is not accidental, nor only on occasion: in fact, in 1950, a few months after the death of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, the Spanish Pavilion - in which the artist had exhibited on several occasions - dedicated a room to the two Fortuny and to the painters who are members of the Madrazo family. This exhibition makes the reasons for this homage its own by developing the relationships that existed between the art of the two great Spaniards. There are two privileged lines of research: that of the practice of painting, firmly inserted in the European tradition of the old masters, and that of the passion for collecting, intended as an opportunity for study and artistic re-elaboration.
