After six months of closure for maintenance works, Palazzo Grassi reopens its doors to the public with "HYPERVENEZIA", an exhibition event dedicated to the city of Venice on the occasion of the 1600th anniversary of its foundation, which presents for the first time to the public the ambitious “Venice Urban Photo Project”, conceived and created by Mario Peliti.

The "HYPERVENEZIA" exhibition, scheduled from 5 September 2021 to 9 January 2022, curated by Matthieu Humery, curator at the Pinault Collection, offers an immersive journey on the first floor of Palazzo Grassi around three installations: a linear path of about 400 photographs that retrace an ideal itinerary for the sestieri of Venice, a site-specific map of the city composed of a mosaic of about 900 geolocated images that offer an overview of Venice and a video installation of over 3,000 photographs that scroll accompanied by a musical composition unpublished created for the exhibition by the well-known musician and composer Nicolas Godin, member of the electronic music duo “Air”.

Starting from 2006, Peliti began to systematically map the city of Venice with his photographs, with the aim of collecting the largest and most organic archive of images of the city ever created and of returning an unprecedented representation of the entire urban fabric in its complexity and continuity. To date, the photographic archive has over 12,000 shots, all rigorously in black and white, made with the same light conditions, without cast shadows, and above all in the absence of people.

“HYPERVENEZIA” offers a radical visual experience: the Venice we know disappears and lets a parallel, empty and timeless Venice emerge. From the Serenissima presented in its pure materiality emanates this disturbing strangeness that characterizes any city left without inhabitants.
