The show

The exhibition is part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Francesco Morosini the Peloponnesia, which see a wide collaboration between the Venetian cultural institutions, the Navy and the Guardia di Finanza for the creation of publications, conferences and exhibitions on the figure of the Captain from Mar in the framework of the Venetian political and military history of the seventeenth century. The exhibition itinerary is built on the basis of the library and the papers of the public historian Pietro Garzoni, kept at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, integrated with the precious and rare coins and medals of the period belonging to the Intesa Sanpaolo Collection. The story of Francesco Morosini and of the Venetian troops during the war of Morea (1684-1699) is thus traced through manuscripts and printed documents in which text and images contribute to make us understand what information was available to historians and how the sources proceeded to creation of the myth of the Serenissima.Central element is the autograph manuscript of the Istoria della Repubblicadi Pietro Garzoni, accompanied by the volumes of the printed edition of the work and the engravings of Vincenzo Coronelli dedicated to him, as well as the manuscripts of reports and news of the Morea and the Aegean that they served as a basis for his work. A vivid representation of the places and events of the time is offered by cartographic and graphic documents such as the map of the peninsula and kingdom of Morea and the views, plants and representations of the fortresses of that region, accompanied by the very detailed patterns of battles designed and printing. A special place occupies in this regard the manuscript Military diary of the Morea expedition, that is, separate information on the fortresses taken in the kingdom of Morea under the command of the Most Emperor K. Procur. Cap. General Francesco Morosini, where the story of the conquest of the cities and piazzas is accompanied by the drawings that represent them, rich in military details, such as the deployment of land forces and galleys at sea and the bombings, but also details of different genres, such as villages and rivers, aqueducts and wells, vineyards and gardens, mosques and castles, ports and customs.
