The show

The exhibition is part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the birth of Francesco Morosini the Peloponnesian, which see a wide collaboration between the Venetian cultural institutions, the Navy and the Guardia di Finanza for the creation of publications, conferences and exhibitions on figure of Capitano da Mar in the framework of the Venetian political and military history of the seventeenth century.

The exhibition itinerary is built on the basis of the library and papers of the public historian Pietro Garzoni, preserved at the Querini Stampalia Foundation, integrated with the precious and rare coins and medals of the time belonging to the Intesa Sanpaolo Collection.

The history of Francesco Morosini and of the Venetian troops during the Morea War (1684-1699) is thus retraced through handwritten and printed documents in which text and images combine to make us understand what information was available to historians and how from the sources we proceeded to the creation of the myth of the Serenissima.

The central element is the autograph manuscript of the Istoria della Repubblica by Pietro Garzoni, accompanied by the volumes of the printed edition of the work and by the engravings by Vincenzo Coronelli dedicated to him, as well as by the manuscripts of reports and news of the Morea and the Aegean which they served as the basis for his work.

A vivid representation of the places and events of the time is offered by cartographic and graphic documents such as the map of the Peninsula and kingdom of Morea and the views, plants and representations of the fortresses of that region, accompanied by the very detailed diagrams of battles drawn and press.

A special place occupies for this aspect the manuscript Military diary of the Morea expedition, that is, distinct reports of the fortresses taken in the kingdom of the Morea under the command of the Excellency K. Procur. Cap. General Francesco Morosini, where the story of the conquest of cities and strongholds is accompanied by the drawings that represent them, rich in military details, such as the deployment of land forces and galleys at sea and bombings, but also details of different kinds, such as villages and rivers, aqueducts and wells, vineyards and gardens, mosques and castles, ports and customs.
