Il Canto del Capro is an unpublished installation work conceived by GianMarco Porru for the spaces of t-space X MAO. The work extends a series of themes present in the artist's research and expands a Mediterranean mythology that reflects on a religious syncretism widespread in different geographical and cultural areas, some of which are represented in the Museum's collections.
Il Canto del Capro is the fantastic reconstruction and three-dimensional visualization of a hypothetical narration that is grafted into the process of religious interpretatio. GianMarco Porru focuses on a suspended time prior to joining the monotheistic cult and presents a narration of Water in the first person, attentive to the rituals intended to propitiate the divinities responsible for storms.
Known in Sardinia as Maimone, according to some versions of the myth Dionysus is venerated in the form of a child and a deity of the underworld such as Cronus and/or Pluvius, different names for the manifestations of the same deity. In the various ancient rituals, at the beginning of the agricultural year, the emphasis is placed not so much on the orgiastic aspect of the Dionysian religion but rather on the pluvial one, the propitiation of which is essential to obtain abundant rains.
This happens through the representation of the passion and death of a victim intended to represent the death and passion of the god himself.
For GianMarco Porru, Sardinia is a speculative territory in which to revisit the idea of the authentic and archaic, questioning the mechanisms of reproduction and representation of national cultural heritages . The reinterpretation of material culture understood as a path that crosses and interrogates the aesthetic and iconographic stratifications - in the archaeological and ethnographic fields - aims to reposition and fabulate unpublished mythological narratives in possible territories of origin, thus recalibrating the hegemonic narrative.
