The GAM - Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Turin hosts for the first time in its spaces a large retrospective dedicated to the work of Giovanni Fattori (Livorno 1825 - Florence 1908), one of the absolute masters of the Italian nineteenth century who was able to interpret in an original and innovative way both the themes of the great battles of the Risorgimento and the subjects linked to the life of the fields and the rural landscape in which he was able to instill, like portraits, new dignity and solemnity.
The exhibition “Factors. Masterpieces and openings on the '900 ", which opens to the public from 14 October to continue until 20 March 2022, is organized and promoted by GAM Torino - Fondazione Torino Musei and by 24 ORE Cultura - Gruppo 24 ORE in collaboration with the Matteucci Institute and the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum of Livorno.
The exhibition itinerary, which presents over 60 masterpieces by the Livorno artist, including large-format canvases, precious tablets and a selection of etchings, is divided into nine sections and covers a wide chronological period that from 1854 to 1894, from the Macchiaioli experimentation and from capital works of the sixties and seventies to the canvases of the mature age, which reveal his acute and innovative gaze, capable of opening up to the imminent twentieth century.
The curators of the project, Virginia Bertone (Chief Conservator of the GAM) and Silvestra Bietoletti (Art historian, specialist in nineteenth-century Tuscan painting), flanked by the Scientific Committee composed of Cristina Acidini, Giuliano Matteucci and Fernando Mazzocca, have conceived an articulated exhibition project where, according to a chronological and thematic arrangement, the works of the master whose artistic history was able to meet, already during the nineteenth century, also the taste of the Turinese, as evidenced by the presence of Fattori at the exhibitions set up in the city - both at the annual events of the Turin Promoting Society of Fine Arts and at the National Exhibitions - from the spring of 1863 until 1902.
