On the occasion of the one hundred and twenty years since the birth of Carlo Levi, the GAM of Turin, in collaboration with the Circolo deiardi Foundation, dedicates to the artist an exhibition that is part of a complex project of meetings, reflections and insights to reread his figure of painter, writer, intellectual, journalist, protagonist of cultural and social life for most of the Italian twentieth century. The complexity of Carlo Levi re-emerges through "All life is far", the review curated by the Circolo dei readers Foundation with GAM - Civic Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, CAMERA - Italian Center for Photography, National Museum of Cinema between painting, literature, fiction, photography and cinema.
With 30 paintings created by Carlo Levi between 1923 and 1973, the exhibition set up in the spaces of the Wunderkammer of the GAM focuses on the overall geography of the artist's existence, between North and South of Italy. These are works that testify to the different stylistic developments of his research, which started at a very young age from a strongly 'objective' painting, and then moved on to a more expressionist representation, and finally, in the post-war period, in tune with a modern realism.
The choice of the two curators Elena Lowenthal and Luca Beatrice focuses on two of the aspects that best characterize Levi's figurative art, the portrait and the landscape, arranging the path with 11 paintings from the Carlo Levidi Foundation in Rome, 8 works drawn from the heritage of the GAM, as well as from the Carlo Levi Art Gallery in Aliano (MT) and from private collections.
