The photographic and documentary exhibition of the Carlo Scarpa International Prize for the Garden 2023–2024, organized by the Benetton Studi Ricerche Foundation, is open at Ca' Scarpa in Treviso
The exhibition itinerary tells, through the photographs of Fabian Martinez and other photographers and scholars, the forms and history of the Espacio Escultórico in the landscape of Pedregal de San Ángel, a place made up of a great collective work of art that emerges from a vast lava surface where new neighborhoods of Mexico City developed in the twentieth century and, above all, the University City of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
A toothed ring with a diameter of 120 meters, composed of 64 concrete prisms, circumscribes a piece of "intact" lava soil, making its expressive power manifest. Landscape and Ecology, Art and Architecture, Geology and Archeology are just some of the disciplines and perspectives that intersect with particular strength and complexity inside and outside the large toothed ring of the Espacio Escultórico, in a contemporaneity that deals daily with a soil and a nature that is very rich and at the same time difficult and fragile, and with an ancestral, pre-Hispanic history.
These relationships and suggestions are recalled by the images and short texts of the exhibition which welcomes the visitor with a photographic installation dedicated to the Espacio Escultórico itself, at different times of the day and in its spiritual dimension, and with a maquette which intends to interpret the monumental nature of the work.
On the third floor of Ca' Scarpa the documentary film Pedregal: the story of the Espacio Escultórico (45'), produced by the Benetton Foundation and directed by Davide Gambino, can be seen.
The exhibition is curated by Patrizia Boschiero and Luigi Latini, also curators of the collective volume “L'Espacio Escultórico e il landscape del Pedregal de San Ángel, Mexico”, Fondazione Benetton–Antiga, available in bookstores and in the bookshops of the Benetton Foundation.
