The National Archaeological Museum of Taranto will host from March 8 to July 6, 2025 Penelope, the exhibition curated by Alessandra Sarchi and Claudio Franzoni, with the organization of Electa, which after being exhibited at the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum arrives in Taranto, dedicating its entire narrative to one of the most powerful female figures in Homeric literature. In the exhibition at MArTA, paintings, sculptures, reliefs, incunabula, prints, and testimonies from numerous Italian and foreign museums and private collections, highlight the salient aspects of Penelope's figure and her legacy over time. The exhibition will dialogue with over twenty artifacts from the Taranto museum, some coming from the deposits, chosen to best represent the thematic nuclei of the exhibition. The loom and the fabric, the gesture and the posture, the world of dreams and the bridal chamber, the veil and modesty, will be the narrative thread chosen by the curators to retrace the myth and legacy of Penelope that reaches us from the remote age of the Homeric poems, through two equally powerful traditions: the literary one and that linked to visual representation. Within the exhibition path, there is also a tribute to Maria Lai, an artist who has placed textile materials at the center of her work. This section of the exhibition is in collaboration with the Lai Archive and Foundation. On the International Women's Day, the world of femininity allows MArTA to speak about women and remove Penelope from commonplaces that only see her tied to the domestic hearth. The ingenious stratagem of the fabric made during the day and undone at night to postpone the choice of one of the suitors as long as possible, the complicity not spoken but evident with the cunning of Ulysses once he returned home, are just some of the traits that make her a challenging female figure compared to the subordination of women in ancient culture.
