Württemberg State Museum

The Landesmuseum Württemberg is a Stuttgart museum dedicated to the history of the region and the territory in which the city is located: the Land Baden-Württemberg. It is located in the Stuttgart Castle, built during the 18th century. The museum was founded in 1862 by King William I of Württemberg, but its origins are much older and have their roots in the so-called "Kunstkammer" where, starting from the sixteenth century, the dukes used to collect everything that was rare, precious or even amazing. The museum's aim is to present the history of the Land from the Stone Age to the present day, passing through the Celts, Romans, Alamanni, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque. The museum itinerary is divided chronologically. The collection preserves various artistic and daily life objects from different centuries. Among others, in the prehistoric section there is a bone flute, made from the wild swan, one of the oldest musical instruments in the world (with about 40,000 years of age); the collection relating to the period of Roman domination shows an overview of southwestern Germany from the 1st to the 4th century BC. All aspects of life in a border province of the Roman Empire are illustrated; significant in the context of the History of Art is the collection of sacred art of the Middle Ages: with over 100 works, it is dedicated to the central themes of iconography and the typical functions of medieval art. Then there are the goods and portraits of the dukes and kings of Württemberg, such as the crown jewels of the kings of Württemberg made with diamonds, emeralds and pearls, as well as the scepter. The Kunstkammer then included several "Mirabilia": rare, precious and curious objects, such as two Aztec wing screens and a jade sculpture, three of the first pre-Columbian objects documented in Europe. In addition, the Landesmuseum Württemberg has acquired one of the largest collections of glassware in the world, showing the history of glass from its origins to the Late Roman and Byzantine period. The oldest objects, from West Asia, date back to the Bronze Age. The collection also features a collection of magnificent Renaissance clocks and scientific instruments.
