From 22 March to 22 June 2025
In spring 2025, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart presents the renowned VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna. With its works of the feminist avant-garde, the largest Austrian energy company VERBUND holds an outstanding position in the photography of the 1970s. For decades, founding director Gabriele Schor has established the concept of the feminist avant-garde in art historical discourse.
In THE GÄLLERY - Room for Photography, the exhibition provides multifaceted insights into the works of female artists of the feminist avant-garde who radically question the role of women in art and society, aiming to establish an alternative image of women from a female perspective.
The exhibition features around 140 works by prominent female photographers of the 1970s, such as VALIE EXPORT and Cindy Sherman. Other featured artists include Martha Rosler, Judy Chicago, Birgit Jürgenssen, Karin Mack, Ulrike Rosenbach, Renate Bertlmann, and Penny Slinger. They all share the common goal of raising their, from a historical perspective, still young emancipated voice against art and society.
These artistic positions illustrate the transformation that took place in the 1970s, not only in art but also in the consciousness of women and their role in society.
In cooperation with Verbund.
