From 11 April to 11 January 2026
The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart cordially invites you to the Great State Exhibition 2025, which for the first time focuses on the extraordinary three-dimensional work of Katharina Grosse. The artist, born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau, is internationally known for her unique, expansive paintings. The exhibition offers the first comprehensive overview of her previously unknown plastic and sculptural work, shedding light on the beginnings of the internationally renowned painter – from the 1980s to the present day.
Grosse transcends the boundaries of two-dimensionality and paints not only traditional canvases but entire rooms, facades, and landscapes. Her experimental approach creates immersive experiences. The highlight of the exhibition is a site-specific installation created specifically for the 26-meter-high dome hall of the art building, making Grosse's art sensually perceptible for everyone.
For almost three decades, Grosse has been using spray paint technique to paint her vibrant, vivid images across canvases, indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as various objects like stones, wood, and furniture. Sculptural forms made of aluminum, bronze, and styrofoam are transformed into lively, dynamic compositions through the integration of colors and natural materials like wood. The exhibition at the Kunstgebäude am Schlossplatz – in the heart of the state capital – showcases early works from the 1980s to the latest canvas works, sculptures, and in situ works. The works presented in Stuttgart provide a comprehensive overview of Grosse's diverse Œuvre and demonstrate the inexhaustible range of painting on different materials, through which she redefines the possibilities of the genre!
