The Musée Archéologique de Strasbourg is the oldest museum in Strasbourg. Founded in the 18th century, it is located in the basement of the Palais Rohan, the former residence of the bishops built in the first half of the 18th century. Today it is one of the most important archeology museums in France dedicated to the archeology of the French territory. Its collection traces several centuries of the ancient ancient history of Alsace and its inhabitants, from the Paleolithic to the beginning of the Middle Ages, organized into four large chronological sections: prehistory, protohistory, Gallo-Roman period, Merovingian period. Each chronological section is organized around the presentation of the most important aspects relating to the civilization in question, the evocation of the major sites of the time and a thematic approach illustrated by numerous objects. The collection continues to expand regularly thanks to archaeological excavations conducted throughout the region. The Musée archéologique de Strasbourg organizes several temporary exhibitions every year to update the most important research and discoveries.
