Aubette 1928 is a modern and contemporary art museum in Strasbourg. Originally, the Aubette complex was a complex consisting of several spaces dedicated to entertainment. The design of this recreational complex was entrusted to Theo Van Doesburg, who was joined by Sophie Taeuber-Art and Jean Arp. The three artists came from the avant-garde artistic movements born after World War II and saw in the Aubette project an opportunity to realize on a large scale the typical principles of the artistic avant-gardes. The ambition of those movements at that time was to break with the art of the past, to propose new forms and a new aesthetic. For Aubette, this utopia takes shape in the use of the architectural grid as a decorative signature of the complex: we find it on the walls, on the furniture and in the signage. But the modernity of the decorations, inaugurated in 1928, was not approved by the public: in 1938 they were therefore covered, making the original work disappear. Today, they have been recovered and classified as an historic monument. This space has now become an exhibition center that hosts a vast program of modern and contemporary art exhibitions.
