The Staatliches Museum Schwerin is a Schwerin museum with a rich collection of Flemish and modern art. It was founded by Frederick Francesco II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1882.
It is thanks to the Dukes of Mecklenburg that Schwerin today has one of the largest reference collections of 17th and 18th century Dutch painting. With works by masters such as Rubens, Frans Hals, Paulus Potter, Gerard Dou, Ludolf Backhuysen, Pieter Claesz, Jan Brueghel the Elder and several others, the golden age of Dutch painting is represented in the Schwerin State Museum by several hundred paintings of different formats. In 2013, thanks to the donation of 155 additional Flemish paintings by the collector Christoph Müller, the Staatliches Museum Schwerin became one of the largest Flemish collections in Germany.
20th century art is represented by Lovis Corinth, Alexej Jawlensky, Max Pechstein, Götz von Seckendorff and Pablo Picasso, among others. Also represented are sculptures by Ernst Barlach and contemporary art by Sigmar Polke, Daniel Spoerri and Rachel Whiteread. Finally, an entire section of the museum is dedicated to Marcel Duchamp, with over 90 works on display, covering all the creative phases of the artist. It is one of the most important collections of the artist in Europe. In addition to various ready-mades, the collection includes various sculptures, numerous graphics, posters and books designed by Duchamp.
