Arcabas Museum in Chartreuse

The Musée Arcabas en Chartreuse is a museum of the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, a commune not far from Grenoble. It is a unique museum of its kind: located in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park, the museum is housed in the church of Saint-Hugues-de-Chartreuse, built in 1860. The museum was strongly desired, conceived and produced by only one artist: Arcabas (1926-2018), one of the major exponents of contemporary Sacred Art. Built over more than thirty years, Arcabas has created an artistic place made up of 111 works among the most successful creations of the sacred art of the twentieth century. After several years of searching for church walls to paint where he could express his faith through painting, it was in February 1952 that Arcabas met the modest church of Saint-Hugues and its parish priest, Raymond Truffot. It is the beginning of an adventure, but also of a friendship between an artist and a priest. The walls of the church are divided into three registers: a frieze on canvas, mainly red, painted with egg, sugar and honey, surrounds the church and connects 2 frescoes made on the lunulae, with themes of human life, along the nave with the themes of the commandments and on the choir, with scenes related to divine life. In the following years he completed his pictorial creation with 53 canvases that illustrate the artist's vision of the world through sacred texts. Having become a departmental museum in 1984, the artist completed his work with the Prédelle, a banner consisting of 53 canvases the following year, and posed one last creation, the Dead Christ in memory of Raymond Truffot in 1992.
