Ceramics Museum

The Musée de la Céramique is a museum in Rouen dedicated to ceramics. Opened in 1864, it is located in the Hôtel d'Hocqueville, a 17th-century hotel particulier (historic residence) in Rouen built on the ruins of the castle of Rouen, which was itself built on the ruins of the Gallo-Roman amphitheater of Rotomagus. The Musée de la Céramique houses one of the most important French public collections of porcelain and majolica. With more than 5000 pieces, the museum presents a comprehensive overview of Rouen porcelain, from the 16th to the 18th century. It also exhibits Renaissance floors, large ceremonial plates with early 18th century decorations, monumental terracotta paintings and sculptures, such as the Celestial and Terrestrial Spheres by Pierre II Chapelle (1725) or the series of busts of the Seasons (1730). Rouen majolica represents more than two-thirds of the collections, but the museum also preserves notable sets from other porcelain and majolica production centers, such as Delft, Nevers and Lille, which allow the museum's collection to be placed in the more general context of ceramics. of the Renaissance Italian majolica and in the creations of the Sèvres manufacture of the 1930s.
