From 18 November to 4 January 2025
From November 18, 2024 to January 4, 2025 AlbumArte, an independent artistic production center in Rome, presents the exhibition WHEN IN ROME. Beyond the periphery of the skin, curated by Adriana Polveroni, featuring unpublished and site-specific works by Verdiana Bove, Guglielmo Maggini, Pietro Moretti, Caterina Sammartino, Adelisa Selimbašić.
The exhibition is the first stage of the itinerant project When in Rome, curated by Adriana Polveroni, produced by AlbumArte, directed by Cristina Cobianchi, and funded by the Lazio Region within the framework of the public notice Lazio Contemporaneo 2022.
The project will be carried out in seven Italian cities in collaboration with Adiacenze Bologna and the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, the Academy of Fine Arts of Frosinone, RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts, La Casa degli Artisti Milano, Mucho Mas! Torino, Toast Project Space Firenze, Zona Rosa Napoli, CONDOTTO48 Roma.
Premiered at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice on June 10, 2024, When in Rome includes not only the exhibition in Rome from November 18, 2024 to January 4, 2025, but also a series of debates and interactions with the public: Thursday, November 7, 2024 at La Casa degli Artisti, Milan; Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at Mucho Mas! Gallery, Turin; Thursday, November 28 at Zona Rosa, Naples; Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Toast Project Space, Florence, concluding in Bologna with the second stage of the exhibition at Adiacenze, a space for research and experimentation in contemporary visual arts, from January 9 to 23, 2025.
When in Rome, shortened from When in Rome do as Romans do, aims to mimic the attitude of foreigners who, upon arriving in Rome, learn to "do as the Romans do," seduced by the charm of the city and its customs, and is also a tribute to a famous Genesis concert in 2007.
At the heart of the project are the results of the investigation conducted by Cristina Cobianchi and Adriana Polveroni on young talents under 35 operating in Rome, especially in workspaces founded and managed by equally young curators in peripheral areas, abandoned factories, former workshops or old garages, disused artisan workshops, who are reshaping the artistic fabric and ferment of the Capital with their open research on the present and multi-voiced dialogue.
