Responsible for the intervention: Flaminia Gennari Santori, assisted by Eng. Giuseppe Silvestri and the arch. Dario Aureli, construction manager.

The architectural project and the study of lighting and carbon fiber beams by Enrico Quell with Paolo Piazza, the design of the systems by Eng. Gianfranco Savini. The works were carried out by the company Re.i.ma Restauri Impianti Manutenzioni Srl, as the agent company of a temporary association of companies, together with Altintech Srl and SP Costruzioni. The works, for a total amount of 952,626 euros, involved the rooms on the ground floor of the south wing of Palazzo Barberini. In total, there are 750 square meters of new exhibition spaces, distributed in 8 rooms of different sizes, and a new bathroom body at the service of visitors.

"Finally we see the results of the ambitious project begun in 2017 for the completion of the large museum of Palazzo Barberini, an open cultural space, available to citizens, where you can discover the palace, the permanent collection, small focus exhibitions and, as in this period, great exhibitions such as Tempo Barocco and Italia in Attesa ”. - comments Flaminia Gennari Santori - “With the new area destined for temporary exhibitions and adapted to the most sophisticated exhibition and environmental standards, Palazzo Barberini shares with the city a new meeting and stimulating place, a context for innovative and always different cultural proposals”.

These spaces, inserted in the area of the Palace close to the gardens, were originally probably intended for use by Francesco Barberini, cardinal nephew of Urban VIII. The particular H-shaped structure of the Palazzo, with two separate wings on the ground floor, each with its own entrances and its own monumental staircase, was in fact also designed with the intention of keeping distinct rooms and audience rooms of the two branches of the family, that secular and cardinal. If on the north front, overlooking the city, there were the rooms intended for Taddeo Barberini, also nephew of the Pope and Commander of the papal army, on the south front, overlooking the internal gardens, the rooms destined for the cardinal branch were located. , represented by the cardinal nephews Francesco and Antonio.

After various vicissitudes due to the alternating fortunes of the Barberini family over the centuries, since 1934 these rooms, together with other areas of the building, have hosted the Officers Club of the Armed Forces, and it is only in 2006 that, following the various agreements between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Defense have become part of the National Galleries of Ancient Art.
