The General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the National Roman Museum - Palazzo Altemps, the MUFOCO - Museum of Contemporary Photography and the Basilico Archive, presents Gabriele Basilico. Rome. On the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the birth of the great master of Italian photography, the exhibition offers a new insight into his visual research. The exhibition will be open to the public from Thursday, December 12, 2024, to Sunday, February 23, 2025, in the rooms of Palazzo Altemps in Rome.
Curated by Matteo Balduzzi and Giovanna Calvenzi, the exhibition presents for the first time to the public an itinerary that traces the main research carried out by Gabriele Basilico on Rome, a city deeply loved and intensely frequented by the Milanese photographer. A selection of over fifty works in a narrative path designed specifically to interact with the spaces of Palazzo Altemps, whose rooms establish a direct relationship with the subjects of the photographs on display.
The guiding theme of the exhibition is the bond between Gabriele Basilico and the Eternal City, built thanks to twenty professional assignments received by the photographer between 1985 and 2011 and the numerous photographic campaigns that have emerged from them.
Fundamental elements of Basilico's research, such as the stratification of epochs and styles and the dialectic between monuments and ordinary building fabric, find in Rome their own apotheosis, providing the photographer with the opportunity to also depict a modern city that can simultaneously include the imposing, shiny, and reflective architectures of rationalist modernity alongside the temples, arches, and palaces of ancient history within the same grand monumentality.
