On May 22, 2024, the third Festival des Cabanes at Villa Medici will be inaugurated, a summer event that transforms the historic gardens of the French Academy in Rome into a laboratory for architectural experimentation and practice. The idea of the hut, which gives the festival its name, is the starting point for a dialogue among architects, artists, designers, and landscapers on a series of themes: how can we propose non-invasive architectural forms? What are the sustainable housing solutions of the future? Six temporary wooden huts designed by: ane architecture, Manuel Bouzas, Campo & Diploma 20 Architectural Association, Huttopia, LAMÉCOL et pratique architecture & fanum architecture. Six groups have been invited to take possession of the historic gardens and propose a wide range of responses: a hut nestled near the umbrella pines, inviting visitors to take refuge to read; a pavilion inspired by classical Roman architecture located next to ancient ruins; a small temple, a tribute to Bramante, where wood and fabric intertwine, and a study that subverts the codes of a cozy environment. Completing the set are two housing prototypes: an emergency space that can be assembled and disassembled in less than 15 minutes, and a self-sufficient energy shelter that rises to reveal new perspectives. Two of the projects were selected in collaboration with the Festival des Cabanes des Sources du Lac d'Annecy, a partner of the Villa Medici Festival. Living the gardens in a new way. Assembled in a few weeks, these temporary architectural structures meet the unchanging tranquility of the historic gardens. Designed in wood or using recycled materials, some blend perfectly into the vegetation, while others wind above the hedges. Moving from hut to hut offers a new experience of the gardens of Villa Medici, while the deck chairs, tables, and benches from the French Fermob collections scattered throughout the grounds invite relaxation and contemplation. Built on the collis hortulorum (hill of gardens), Villa Medici is inseparable from its Renaissance gardens, a source of inspiration for artists like Jacopo Zucchi and Diego Velázquez. Its configuration and tree species testify to the historical development of Rome and its skyline: on-site there is a remarkable collection of citrus trees inspired by Renaissance crops, vines and historic plants, in addition to the umbrella pines planted in 1832 on the initiative of Ingres, then director of the Academy.
